Those important years of Junior Secondary Schooling

Years 7, 8 and 9

Year 7 students have been a part of the junior secondary campus at Redlynch State College for many years now. Over this time the Year 7’s have been regarded as a vital component in the College structure, not merely an “add-on”. Establishing a learning environment that is conducive to ensure successful transitioning from a traditional primary to a secondary model is of high priority. Students are based in a designated learning centre with a small focused teaching team that develops and nurtures our students with the essential independent learning skills – organisation, presentation of work, study, meeting deadlines, timetabling and punctuality. Feedback from parents and teaching colleagues at other year levels indicates that this skill development is successful.

Unlike most other Year 7 students in Queensland our students experience one lesson a week in the science labs, regular weekly access to computer labs, and participate in a wide range of elective subjects which include Japanese or French, Manual Arts, the Arts and subjects with a technology focus.

Years 8 and 9 students continue to experience a wide range of curriculum offerings in preparation for their entry into Senior schooling. Pastoral care forms a vital component in the student’s school life. Students also experience a “Wellbeing” program that explores personal safety, health issues, relationship building and countering bullying.

The Year 7, 8 and 9 experience is vastly different from normal primary school life; one that is exciting and high in learning opportunities provided by enthusiastic teaching staff.
