Recently, our Primary Campus students had the opportunity to be involved in Book Week. Book Week is a celebration of reading and Australian literature. The theme for Book Week this year is ‘Have you found your treasure?’ Students have discussed that a treasure could be someone special to them. It could be something they have at home like a soft toy that is precious to them. It could even be a book they love to read over and over again. We have national treasures such as the Great Barrier Reef that we must take care of so it is there for future generations to enjoy.

Activities for each year level are based around the books selected by the Australian Children’s Book Council. Each year the Council select 6 books from hundreds they read as the best in different categories. They then select the winner from those 6 books. Activities have included: water colour painting, making treasure boxes, making penguins, coding, treasure hunts, making a triorama, skimming and scanning for information in a book.

A big thank you goes out to Di Phelps, Danielle Bowthorpe, Beth Mollenhauer and Di Ward for all their hours of work in preparing things for the display and activities for students to help make Book Week a huge success and lots of fun for the students. I would also like to thank the classes that have completed a treasure box diorama of a book their class love to read. The students are so excited when they bring them to the library for other students to look at and love the creativity that this activity presents for them.

Book Week culminated with the Prep Book Week Character Parade held last Friday morning. The parade was a very happy occasion. The students were beautifully dressed in their favourite book character costumes. A group of staff helped me to tell the story called ”The Very Noisy Baby”. I loved seeing the Prep students giggling at what was going on and enjoying one of the shortlisted books. A big thank you to the staff who helped out. It was one of those great occasions where we have loads of fun! Thanks to the parents for all their efforts with the book character costumes.
