My time at Redlynch State College is almost at an end and I shall fly home to Vienna in July.
I have made many friends during my 6 month study experience in Cairns. My study choices turned out to be interesting, exciting, fun and very helpful:
• English
• Certificate Three in Outdoor Education/Recreation
• Aquatic Practices
• Mathematical Methods
• Health and Physical Education
• French
• English as a second language
My results included high grades in English and French. I was successful in all my areas of study and found the academic part of my stay to be valuable.
The activities that Redlynch State College offered included an excursion to the Great Barrier Reef (Norman Reef) where we went snorkelling, identified various marine life and coral. This was a great day out. We even saw schools of brilliantly coloured tropical fish and a green turtle which made it a day to remember. I also visited the Daintree, a World Heritage rainforest in the Tropical North on a two night school camp. I had the opportunity to experience the local tropical rainforest. I even had the chance to hold a snake (my host family has an albino carpet python as well)!
As part of Outdoor recreation studies we went on a camp to the Tully River were we experienced ‘swift water rescue’ training and did some white water rafting. Outdoor recreation was an amazing experience and the school has a lot of opportunities for excursions. This year the school had great results in White Water Rafting.
In French I learnt a lot and performed speeches in front of the class, I even wrote my own text. I had a lot of fun in French and really worked on my French skills. I also learned about the French and French-Canadian culture.
Mathematics was a lot of fun. I love solving equations and learned to plot graphs along with some coastal navigation mathematics.
Mr. Bertram’s cooking lessons changed my life forever. It was an inspirational experience, that words can’t describe. In EAL/D class we also learnt culinary vocabulary and cooked crocodile and kangaroo. Each term we had a cooking class in the college’s commercial kitchens and these lunches were spectacular. Who would have thought I could cook and eat crocodile?
I attended English as a second language lessons where I expanded my vocabulary and received support for my schoolwork by the EAL/D coordinator and teacher Mr Bertram. The International support team coordinated my stay and were always on hand to answer any question.
I had great results in English, thanks to Mr. Bertram.
Overall, my experience at Redlynch State College and Tropical Far North Queensland was amazing. I shall never forget this time.
I would like to thank Redlynch State College, the International Team and my Host family for the wonderful time I have had over the past six months. I love the Australian lifestyle and I look forward to my next visit to Australia.
